Graduate Design Office is a pioneering approach to post-graduate education piloted by Salford University. Lucid Director Andrew Hodgin has been mentoring a group of students along with 3 other member businesses of BIDA, the representative body for UK industrial design.
The scheme is designed to give students support from practicing product designers as they tackle challenges set by local community groups, individuals and start-up businesses.
Andrew comments: “The University of Salford’s foresight in involving practising designers in this module should be applauded. The students and businesses really benefitted from exposure to commercial best-practice. Support from four different design businesses led to the cross-fertilisation of ideas, different approaches to problem-solving and broader knowledge transfer. We hope that Graduate Design Office becomes a model for better industry-academia collaboration in the future…”
