Francis Searchlights has an unrivalled reputation in marine lighting. Robust, high-output lights have been helping illuminate difficult situations in incredibly hostile conditions for many years.
The company did good business supplying relatively utilitarian designs for use on luxury super yachts. With increasing price-based competition, Francis knew it needed to stand out to thrive.
Lucid’s industrial design team was commissioned to lift customer perception of the Francis brand with a product design targeted at the discerning owners and specifiers of luxury craft.
Design is a real positive differentiator for our business.
– Malcolm Dobson: MD, Francis Searchlights
The team started by defining visual forms with emotive and immediate connection to the sea, the architecture of yachts and luxury products. Alternative design solutions were developed and presented to the Francis team.
A simple cast organic form with wave detailing had clear visual standout. We developed the design to consider repackaging the lamp elements and creating a robust, watertight structure with effective heat dissipation. Production methods were considered for the relatively low volume.
Launched at the Monaco Yacht Show, Voyager II is redefining the market’s perception of Francis into a leader in design.
